About Napa County

Napa County is located 50 miles north of the San Francisco Bay Area in Northern California. One of the original counties of California, it was created in 1850 at the time of statehood. The county is well known as “The Napa Valley” and is a dramatic visual treat. Mt. St. Helena, at the north end of the valley, rises over 4300 feet from the valley floor, flanked to the east by the Palisades, a stunning mile-long volcanic ridge that overlooks Calistoga and the Valley. More than 30 miles in length and up to 3 miles wide, vineyards dominate the valley landscape, anchored by dozens of wineries and quaint Wine Country towns. The Napa River, which sculpted the valley, meets the San Pablo Bay, at the southern end, giving Napa residents who love the water a place to dock their sailing crafts.

Charles Krug is credited with establishing Napa Valley's first commercial winery in 1861, and by 1889 there were more than 140 wineries in operation, including Schramsberg (founded in 1862), Beringer (1876) and Inglenook (1879). When Prohibition was enacted in 1920, vineyards were abandoned and many winemakers found other trades during the next 14 years, with a handful of wineries to produce sacramental wines. With the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, Napa Valley's wine industry began its renaissance: a period of recovery, then tremendous expansion.

Today, Napa Valley is home to more than 260 wineries. Its growers and vintners combine cutting-edge science with traditional techniques, and its reputation for producing world-class wines is firmly established in an ever-expanding global market.

The Napa Chamber of Commerce supports valley businesses and the community through networking, education and advocacy.

As of 2000 the population is 124,279. The county seat is Napa. The main population areas of Napa County are, American Canyon, Angwin, Calistoga, Deer Park, Napa, St. Helena, and Yountville.
