About Sonoma CountyFort Ross, currently a state park that lies north of Bodega Bay, was utilized to supply agricultural products to Alaskan fur traders. Fort Ross inhabitants carried on trade with the Spaniards from 1810 to 1822. The Spaniards were influential in Sonoma County and founded the Mission San Francisco Solano which was later called the Sonoma Mission. In 1835, General Vallejo established one of the three pueblos in the state at Sonoma. In 1846, the county was the scene of the Bear Flag Revolt. A small group of Americans encouraged by Captain John C. Fremont captured General Vallejo and proclaimed a “California Republic”. Just one hour north of San Francisco, Sonoma County is known for award-winning wineries, recreation and natural beauty. It is a region of spectacular attractions, fine wineries, dramatic coastlines, verdant hills and charming inns. It also graced with bustling, vibrant cities and picturesque hamlets. Sonoma County can be divided into seven areas: Central Sonoma County: Santa Rosa, Windsor and Oakmont Geography has been a significant factor in Sonoma County’s growth and development. Coastal plains, valleys, hills and mountains comprise the landscape. There are redwood forests and 76 miles of Pacific Coast beaches, complete with the fishing village of Bodega Bay. The elevations range from sea level to 4,262 feet on Mount St. Helena. The area’s rich soil and temperate climate have made Sonoma County one of the top grape-growing regions in the world. The county has become known for the fine wines produced in this prime agricultural belt.
