Jenner, California Real Estate, Land, History and General Information

In 1868, Charles Jenner arrived at the North Coast with the intention of writing a book. The town of Jenner is named for this literary man. However, the history of the area dates further back. In 1811, Alexander Kuskoff sailed into Bodega Bay and annexed the entire coastal area for the Russian Crown. He named the nearby river "Slavianki" and it is still known as the Russian River.

Jenner became part of the Muniz Rancho land grant in 1845 while California still belonged to Mexico. Governor Pio Pico granted the Muniz Rancho to Manual Torres. The grant was comprised of nearly 17,600 acres extending from Duncans Mills to Timber Cove along the coast.

John Rule built a sawmill with the capacity of 40,000 board feet of lumber per day. Rule died prior to the mill being operated and the mill was dismantled shortly thereafter. In 1905 the Jenner School was constructed.

Modern-day Jenner is a picturesque seaside town where one can enjoy a delicious bowl of clam chowder at one of several fine restaurants. Jenner's bed and breakfasts can accommodate those in need of a peaceful weekend getaway. Jenner can get foggy in the summer, though it has a mild winter climate.

Along Highway 1, there are many beach side parks that are popular with hikers, bird watchers and those who simply want to take in the ocean view. Jenner sits at the mouth of the Russian River where seals sunbathe and Goat Rock dominates the landscape

Jenner is located 79 miles north of San Francisco on Highway 101 and 116 or can be accessed from River Road 34 miles going west from Santa Rosa.
