Petaluma, California Real Estate, Land, History and General Information

Petaluma was one of the largest cities in California during the 1860's. Mariano Vallejo, Commandant of Mexico's expansion built a hacienda-fort at Petaluma. In 1870, the San Francisco and Northern Pacific Railroad created a line between Petaluma and Santa Rosa and eventually the line was extended to Cloverdale. The later half of the 19th century, Petaluma became a farming center.

Petaluma California real estate and historyIn the 20th century, Petaluma became the egg capital of the world. Rising labor costs in the 1930's started the industry on a slow decline. After that the chickens and roosters were replaced by cattle, sheep and development. During the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, Petaluma was virtually untouched and left many quaint Victorians and commercial buildings intact. The west side's downtown area is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Petaluma is a river town and the second largest city in Sonoma County located 35 miles north of San Francisco. Highway 101 bisects Petaluma into the east and west sides. The west side contains the historic part of town and the east side is the area is where most of the growth is taking place. The Petaluma River runs from Petaluma to San Pablo Bay for 14 miles. Petaluma is known for its hi-tech telecommunications firms and is called "Telecom Valley." Petaluma has many community events such as the "Butter and Eggs Parade" and the "World Wristwrestling Competition." Petaluma has been chosen many times for movies such as "American Graffiti" and "Peggy Sue Got Married" along with many commercials. It is also the home of the Santa Rosa Junior College satellite campus. Petaluma shows its community spirit with a variety of special events that take place throughout the year.

Petaluma is located south of Santa Rosa and 35 miles north of San Francisco. It is located on the east and westside of Highway 101.
