Santa Rosa, California Real Estate, Land, History and General Information

World-famous horticulturist Luther Burbank (1849 -1926) believed Santa Rosa to be "the chosen spot of all this earth as far as nature is concerned."

Santa Rosa California real estate and historyIndeed, Santa Rosa remains a desirable area to live, with Burbank's home and garden one of many historic landmarks open to the public. New housing developments have sprung up in recent years as people continue to be attracted to this central hub of the county. Not only is Santa Rosa the largest city in Sonoma County, but also the largest city between San Francisco and Portland, Oregon.

Rich in American Indian and Spanish history, Santa Rosa was named after a padre escaping from Indians on the feast day of St. Rose of Lima. In 1837, Maria Ignacia Lopez de Carrillo established the first permanent residence along the Santa Rosa Creek. Santa Rosa is part of the Rancho Cabeza de Santa Rosa, one of the early land grants distributed in California. Santa Rosa launched its first newspaper, called the Sonoma Democrat, in October 1857. Today it is known as the Press Democrat.

Santa Rosa is blessed with a moderate climate and offers outdoor activities including hiking, bicycling and water recreation with public pools in town and Lake Sonoma, the Russian River and the coast a short drive away. The city's updated shopping malls, downtown area and historic Railroad Square offer a variety of specialty stores, restaurants and cafes. The annual Rose Parade held in the downtown area is fun for all ages.

The city also features attractions like Ripley's Believe It Or Not Museum and the Charles M. Schulz Museum. The latter celebrates the Peanuts comic strip and its creator, Charles Schultz, who also loved living in Santa Rosa.

Santa Rosa is located about 54 miles north of San Francisco on Highway 101. It is divided north and south by Highway 101 and east and west by Highway 12. Sonoma County Airport (renamed Charles Schultz Airport) is north of Santa Rosa with access from Highway 101.
