Sebastopol, California Real Estate, Land, History and General Information

The first resident of what would become Sebastopol was Joaquin Carrillo, who built his adobe house on Llano de Santa Rosa in 1846. Jasper O'Farrell, a surveyor, named the district Analy (after his sister, Ann) when the township was established. In the 1850's, Sebastopol was named for the Russian seaport of Sevastopol, which figured prominently in the Crimean War being fought overseas.

Other early Sebastopol residents were farmers and tradesmen. The primary crop was Gravenstein apples (which make the best apple pie). More settlers moved into the areas as the Gold Rush fizzled.

Famed horticulturist Luther Burbank established his 18-acre Gold Ridge Environmental Farm here in the late 1800's. A portion of this landmark is currently being restored. In 1890 the Northwestern Pacific Railroad opened a branch to Sebastopol. In 1904, an electric train carried passengers between Petaluma, Santa Rosa and Sebastopol and as far as Forestville. Many of the charming Victorians they built in the early 1900's are still here. Until a few years ago, Sebastopol was one of the few places that had train running down the middle of the main street. The topography is a diverse mix of rolling hills, redwood forests and breathtaking wine country views.

Known as the Gravenstein Apple Capital of the World, Sebastopol is also in the heart of a premium wine-producing region. Newer housing developments including condominiums and apartments have been established in recent years. Sebastopol has good public schools, including a centrally located high school. It is also the home of the Apple Blossom Festival and Cajun Festival. Major employers include O'Reilly and Associates, Safeway, Analy High School, Sebastopol Union School and Palm Drive Hospital.

Sebastopol is located 7 miles west of Santa Rosa, 13 miles east of Bodega Bay and the Pacific Ocean, 10 miles from the Russian River, and 56 miles north of San Francisco on State Highway 116.
